Troubleshooting a stuck Windows Update that won't finish installing
A Windows update that freezes at “Working on updates,” refuses to install, or returns to the same percentage can leave a PC exposed to security flaws. Identify the failed stage first. A stalled download, a rejected package and a restart loop have different causes, so one reset will not solve every case. Work from harmless checks towards component repairs only when evidence supports them. Learn more about как правильно хранить запасные Asic платы и чипы.
Australian connections add a wrinkle: homes may use NBN, fixed wireless, satellite or, in some areas, ADSL, and each can behave differently during a feature update. A router problem may stop the download, while an outage can interrupt file extraction. Attempt the work with stable mains power, keep a laptop on its charger and avoid large downloads on the same connection. Summer storms and bushfire-related disruptions make this important outside major cities.
Before changing anything, check Windows Update history and any Security alert, then create a restore point if available. Copy irreplaceable files to an external drive or reputable cloud account. If BitLocker is enabled, save the recovery key separately; boot changes can otherwise make Windows look inaccessible. On a managed work computer, obtain IT approval before resetting services or moving cached update folders.
Most failures are caused by inadequate space, a corrupt cache, damaged system files, a blocked service or an incompatible driver. Repeated failures can instead indicate storage, memory, firmware or operating-system upgrade problems. Record each error code and the last successful update. Use day-first date notation (DD/MM/YYYY), and confirm the state’s time zone and whether daylight saving applies when logging diagnostic history.
Read the failure before changing the system
In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update, choose Update history and expand the failed item for its code. Windows 10 uses Update & Security. If a restart is required, finish it before judging the installation. A busy disk, network activity or the progress window can make a slow update look frozen, so note how long the display remains unchanged rather than cancelling after a few minutes.
Common codes offer clues. 0x80070002 often means a missing or renamed system file; 0x80073703 points to a corrupt package; and 0x80070005 signals a permissions or security-software conflict. Check the exact code against Microsoft documentation and establish whether the same update failed more than once. Repeated failures matter more than one interrupted download, particularly when the machine reboots normally.
Use an account with administrator rights for the repairs below. Check Windows Security and third-party antivirus for blocked files or driver alerts, and record the build number using winver. Knowing whether the device runs Windows 10 or 11 helps distinguish a cumulative-update, driver or upgrade problem. Confirm free space and a recent backup before resetting the cache.
Free space and steady connectivity
Allow at least 15 to 20 GB free on the Windows drive, with more for a feature update. Use Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files or Disk Cleanup, remove unused applications, and move large game or video files elsewhere. Do not manually empty SoftwareDistribution yet. Keep Windows on its original system volume where possible, and leave room for rollback files and automatic backups.
Test the service by opening a website and restarting the modem or router, especially after an outage. Disconnect a VPN temporarily because some privacy services filter update downloads. In Windows Update, use the pause control if a feature refresh is downloading, complete any outstanding restart, then resume with one optional update selected. Check that large packages are not downloading over a metered connection.
Delivery Optimization can share files with nearby Windows devices, which may stall on an unusual network setup. Leave it enabled for the first retry, but turn off “Allow downloads from other devices” if the update repeatedly stops at the same percentage. A surge protector or UPS is sensible for Australian desks where mains interruptions occur. Never force a shutdown while the installer is active.
Reset Windows Update components
Windows includes a repair tool that can restart the update service and clear part of its queue. On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, select Windows Update and choose Run. On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Windows Update. Restart when prompted and retry before making manual changes.
If the built-in tool fails, reset the cache from an elevated Command Prompt or Terminal. Paste these one at a time: net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, net stop cryptsvc, ren "%windir%\SoftwareDistribution" SoftwareDistribution.old, ren "%windir%\System32\catroot2" catroot2.old, then start the services with net start cryptsvc, net start bits and net start wuauserv. The .old names preserve the previous folders.
Restart and let Windows redownload the package. This can take longer than a routine patch because feature files are large. If a command says a service is not started, continue. If access is denied, check endpoint protection and organisational update policies. Do not import unexplained registry scripts from forums, as they can disable security controls or break the update process.
Repair system files and drivers
Corrupt system components can prevent a package from being unpacked correctly. Open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, allowing it to finish, followed by sfc /scannow. These tools repair protected Windows files and can use a local source or Windows Update to restore damaged content. If DISM cannot obtain healthy files, official Microsoft installation media may be needed as an alternative source.
Reboot and retry after the repairs. Update chipset, storage-controller, display and network drivers from the computer maker’s support site, because generic driver packages can trigger the conflict being repaired. Check the drive’s reliability information and run chkdsk /scan before scheduling disk repair. A failing SSD or HDD, loose memory module or firmware error calls for hardware diagnosis rather than another forced installation.
Specialist workshops can apply the advice on safe ASIC storage to component labelling, anti-static handling and traceability. The same inventory discipline reduces mistakes with shared PC workshop spares, where a labelled drive or module is easier to match than an unidentified box.
For a Windows 10 device, check PC Health Check for Windows 11 readiness, including TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and processor support. A feature update that repeatedly fails may need a planned operating-system migration rather than another patch. Backup, storage capacity and the availability of suitable drivers should be assessed before starting that migration.
Know when specialist help is needed
Seek professional repair when the PC reaches a blue screen, restarts into recovery, refuses to boot after the update, reports a storage or memory fault, or holds business data that cannot risk further changes. Remote support can handle a corrupt cache or damaged account, while on-site work may suit hardware symptoms. Back up the disk image or essential data first, and give the technician the error code, build number and sequence of attempted fixes.
For small businesses in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide, the local IT market includes managed-service providers and specialist Windows technicians; regional customers may need remote support or freight arranged carefully. Movian Security’s local repair partners provide a route for matching Windows troubleshooting, malware scanning, system cleanup, performance tuning, backup and hardware work with an appropriate technician. Confirm data-handling terms in writing when a device contains client or health information covered by Australian privacy law.
After a successful repair, verify that the build number has advanced, no error is logged and a backup can be restored. Keep automatic updates enabled and maintain two copies of important data. If storage or memory is replaced, check warranty terms and Australian Consumer Law protections; JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks and specialist dealers offer options, but compatibility and supported return conditions should be confirmed before fitting a part. A staged repair preserves data and avoids an unnecessary reinstall.
